Program

The conference starts on Wednesday with an evening together in Artfactory Siihtala. The evening’s program includes a keynote in Finnish by Eeva Jokinen, light snacks and cultural program. Wednesday’s event is included in the registration fee, but requires separate registration on the registration form.

The workshop sessions will be held from Thursday morning to Friday afternoon. We recommend that participants arriving from outside of Joensuu arrange their travel to the city at the latest on Wednesday evening, to be able to participate to the sessions held on Thursday morning.

The Keynote speakers of the conference are Professor of Ethnomusicology Jocelyne Guilbault (University of California, Berkeley), Professor of Social and Public Policy Eeva Jokinen (University of Eastern Finland), and Professor of Media Studies Susanna Paasonen (University of Turku).

The conference program also includes a panel discussion on Thursday (in Finnish). The panelists are Mona Mannevuo (University of Turku), Ilmari Kortelainen (The University of the Arts Helsinki), Taija Roiha (University of Jyväskylä) and Marianna Keisalo (University of Helsinki). The panel chair is Juhana Venäläinen (University of Eastern Finland).

Additionally, on Wednesday we will arrange a workshop on article publication aimed for doctoral students working on their dissertation. More information on the workshop can be found here.

On Thursday evening there is a dinner event with cultural program in restaurant Kerubi. The dinner event requires separate registration on the registration form and costs 42 euros. The fee includes a dinner menu and a toast.

Keynote speakers

Jocelyne Guilbault is Professor of ethnomusicology at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work is concerned with power relations, political economies, music industries, labor practices, cultural politics of aesthetics, and work ethics in Caribbean popular musics. Stressing a multidisciplinary approach, she addresses these issues in the scholarly intersections of music, anthropology, cultural studies, and history. Her research in Saint Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, and Trinidad is reported in articles and in Zouk: World Music in the West Indies, Governing Sound: the Cultural Politics of Trinidad’s Carnival Musics, and Roy Cape: a Life on the Calypso and Soca Bandstand (co-authored with Roy Cape). Her latest project, co-edited with Timothy Rommen, is titled Sounds of Vacation: Political Economies of Caribbean Tourism.

Susanna Paasonen is Professor of Media Studies at University of Turku. With an interest in studies of sexuality, media and affect, she is the PI of the consortium “Intimacy in Data-Driven Culture” funded by the Strategic Research Council at the Academy of Finland (2019-2022/25). Susanna is most recently author of Carnal Resonance: Affect and Online Pornography (MIT Press 2011), Many Splendored Things: Thinking Sex and Play (Goldsmiths Press 2018), NSFW: Sex, Humor and Risk in Social Media (with Kylie Jarrett and Ben Light, MITP 2019), Objectification: On the Difference Between Sex and Sexism (with Feona Attwood, Alan McKee, John Mercer and Clarissa Smith, Routledge 2020), Who’s Laughing Now? Feminist Tactics in Social Media (with Jenny Sundén, MITP 2020) and Dependent, Distracted, Bored: Affective Formations in Networked Media (MITP 2021), and editor of Disturbing Differences (with Marianne Liljeström, Routledge 2010) and Networked Affect (with Ken Hillis and Michael Petit, MITP 2015). She currently serves on the editorial/advisory boards of the journals Sexualities, New Media & Society, Social Media & Society, Porn Studies, International Journal of Cultural Studies, Postmodern Culture, Journal of Scandinavian Cinema, MedieKultur, Capacious, Monstrum and Kvinder, Køn & Forskning.

Eeva Jokinen is Professor of Social and Public Policy at University of Eastern Finland. She has made research on various formations of gender, work and labour: in tourism and service industry together with Prof. Soile Veijola (including The Body in Tourism, Theory, Culture & Society, 1994, The Figuration of the Tourist pin Contemporary Cultural Critique in Touring Cultures, Routledge 1997, and Towards a Hostessing Society. Mobile Arrangements of Gender and Labour, NORA 2008); in everyday life (eg. Aikuisten arki, 2005, Precarious Everyday Agency, European Journal of Cultural Studies 2016); at precarious life conditions (edited compilations Prekarisaatio Pohjois-Karjalassa, Tutkijaliitto 2011 and Prekarisaatio ja affekti, Nykykulttuuri 2015). She is currently a PI in a research project on Lean, Work and Gender in Biocapitalism (Academy of Finland 2018-22).

Covid-19 and Potential Influence on the Conference

The organizers of the conference actively follow and assess the potential influence of the Covid-19 pandemic to the health and security of arranging the conference in Joensuu. As of now, we are organizing the conference in Joensuu. However, if necessary, the conference is moved to be held fully online. Any potential changes will be informed to the participants well in advance.
